Alexandria’s Winter Activities in the Great Outdoors

Two people enjoy Alexandria's winter activities in the great outdoors, cross-country skiing on a snowy trail through tall, leafless trees beneath a clear blue sky. The person in front wears a brown jacket and sunglasses; the one behind wears red.

7. Candlelight Events at area State Parks

Sometimes, nothing can be as beautiful as darkness. If you’ve never experienced a candlelight event at a State Park, you are definitely missing out! These special and very unique events offer a fantastic way to explore in the winter while enjoying the moon and the stars. Hundreds of candle luminaries light your path as you hike, ski or snowshoe (depending on snow levels) through trails in the park. There is a warming house and fires along the way to enjoy warmth, snacks and a hot beverage. Typically scheduled close to a full moon, the dates are December 31st, January 23rd and February 20th at Lake Carlos State Park…and February 13th at Glacial Lakes State Park. “The dance between darkness and light will always remain — the stars and the moon will always need the darkness to be seen.”
