Tracking Down Walleyes on the Move

Four men stand outdoors in front of a boat, each proudly holding up several large walleye they caught, smiling at the camera. Green trees fill the background on a sunny day.

The walleye fishing remains quite good around the Alexandria area.  Since my last report the fish have been on the move.  They went from holding in 12’-17’ of water in the weeds, to roaming the outside weed edge in 18’-24’.  Anytime you have moving fish you have to be willing to move with them.  I recommend moving until you locate the walleye and then fishing them.  This may sound like common sense, but I see many anglers just fishing where they’ve caught them in the past.  Use your electronics and keep on the move until you locate them.  Even the most basic electronics will tell you if you have fish under your boat.

The next step is choosing what technique you’re going to use and when.  Being the fish are on the outside weed edge I will generally troll with one of the following presentations, spinners, Lindy rigs or crank baits.  If the fish are spread out on the bottom I like to use spinner rigs tipped with leeches or crawlers (trolled at .8-1.1mph).   If the fish are in tight clusters in small areas I use Lindy rigs tipped with leeches or crawlers (trolled real slow, .2-.5mph).  If the fish are suspended and spread out it’s hard to beat a crankbait (trolled at 2-2.5mph).

Anyone of the above techniques can work on any given day, so pay attention to your locator and let the fish tell you what to use!  We are catching a lot of fish right now with many keeper sized walleye 14”-19” as well as some large picture fish being caught.  It’s hard to beat the combination of nice weather and great fishing right now, so bring the family out fishing soon!
