The Faces Behind Alexandria’s Vibrant Tourism Industry

On a sunny summer weekend, it’s easy to see why people are drawn to Alexandria.

Downtown sidewalks buzz with activity as visitors and locals move between unique shops. Restaurant patios fill up, the lakes come alive with anglers, boaters and swimmers, and scenic trails draw cyclists and walkers looking to enjoy the outdoors. Take a closer look and you’ll spot people soaking it all in—relaxing where they’re staying, browsing the farmers market, heading out for a day trip to a nearby orchard or vineyard, or getting ready for a night at the theater.

There’s something here for everyone, in every season. Whether it’s a family vacation in the summer or professionals attending a weekend conference, travel and tourism play a meaningful role in Alexandria’s economy and in the lives of the people who power it—those creating the experiences, serving the meals and running the businesses that keep it all moving.

At the statewide level, the impact is clear. Without visitor spending, each Minnesota household would pay an additional $1,031 in taxes each year. Closer to home in Douglas County, tourism supports 1,812 jobs, generates $21 million in tax revenue, and contributes $234.3 million in overall economic impact.

Tourism touches people in different ways. Some recognize it as an important economic driver and appreciate the tax relief it provides. For others, it’s deeply personal—shaping their work, their livelihoods and the way they care for their families.

Here are a few of the faces behind Alexandria’s vibrant tourism industry, sharing why it matters:
