Golf Courses Closing Down as November Approaches

A golfer swings a club on a green course surrounded by colorful autumn trees in the late afternoon sunlight, savoring the peaceful scene as some golf courses are closing down.

Any golf in October in the Alexandria Area is usually a bonus, so for courses to finally be closing down at the end of the month is definitely a cause for celebration. A few will stay open, but with temperatures forecast to drop below freezing by Halloween, I wouldn’t expect that extended season to last long.

Geneva Golf Club has announced that Monday, October 28th their 2024 season will officially wrap up. As they say, “All good things must come to an end.” Grant Hanson, Director of Golf at Geneva Golf Club, says, “the course has seen the most golf ever played on it in September and October”. A few of the tournaments that took place this fall include the PGA Parent/Child Tournament, The Tim Herron Junior Event, along with multiple charity events, social golf events, and numerous local tournaments. Looking forward, Geneva Golf Club is expanding their clubhouse to provide more seating options. This should help with tournament banquets and with other events at the club in 2025.

Over at the Alexandria Golf Club, they plan to remain open until this weekend, depending on weather. The course saw some changes to the 11th hole and will be working on revisions to much of the area surrounding the course in the area of the 11th green. There have been and will continue to be some adjustments throughout the course, making it a par 71, with eventually up to 6700 yards of golf from the tips. In addition to changes, they also provided more of the same great tradition continuing with their 104th Resorters Golf Tournament. A great showing of participants and fans. AGC will have their 105th Resorters Tournament August 3-9, 2025.

Golf was good in the Alexandria Lakes Area for 2024. The Chain of Links Golf Trail, which includes 9 golf courses in the area was filled with many opportunities to play a few rounds this year. This includes all the fun golf at nearby Lake Miltona Golf Club, all the way down to the southern edge of the golf trail at Minnewaska Golf Club near Glenwood. Lake Miltona Golf Club closed earlier this month and Minnewaska Golf Club had their last day on Sunday, October 27th.

An exciting addition to your golf options in the 2025 season will be the Tom Lehman designed Lil’ Darling Golf Club. This 9-hole par 3 course is still being created, but the greens are set and all of the earth moving and shaping has been completed. It is located just south of the current Alexandria Golf Club. More than 200 contributors donated to help significantly reduce the cost of developing the course.

The Lil’ Darling Golf Club course is in the process of being completed. It will be part of an effort to provide youth golfers more access to golf in the Alexandria Area, in addition to it being a fun par-3 course for others.

There is always a host of indoor simulator golf options in the lakes area so you can play no matter the time of year, or the weather. Options range from Albatross Indoor Golf, to the Garden Center Lanes simulator, the Scott Dirck Golf Academy and the newest addition of them, Hook and Slice.
