The Beginnings of Autumn Beauty (with Fall Color Update)

A small canoe with people paddling on a calm lake, surrounded by green trees and reeds showing the beginnings of autumn under a bright blue sky with scattered white clouds.

Now that Labor Day is over and school is in session for most of the country, there is concrete certainty for the arrival of autumn. Although the official beginning of fall is marked on September 22nd during the autumnal equinox, the celebration of Labor Day is commonly linked to the last blast of summer fun.
Don’t fret about the end of summer, as autumn in the Alexandria area usually has plenty of days with summer-like weather to complement fall fun. This was definitely the case for an adventure out on the Central Lakes Trail during the first day of September…temperature 74 degrees, sunny with barely any wind.

While still plenty of green on the trees, I could see some places where the color has started to turn. A couple maple trees caught my eye as the vibrant red colors are starting to show at the tops.

The most beautiful and brilliant colors that trees produce in fall depends mostly on weather conditions through the season. Luckily for the Alexandria area, a wet summer with the start of cool nights can give us some indication that we can expect excellent colors in the area. The cooler temperatures of fall and the beautiful hues of color from the trees make it a perfect time to get outside on the trail, get a boat on the lake or take a simple driving tour to take it all in.

It’s difficult to project when the fall colors will reach peak, but typically for Central Minnesota the peak occurs sometime between mid/late September to early/mid October. Get out and have some fun! Plan your Alexandria autumn get-away today!
