Alexandria Fishing Report September 2014

A small boat with several people is silhouetted against the water at sunrise, the sun low on the horizon and its reflection shimmering across a calm lake. Trees line the distant shore in this peaceful September 2014 scene from an Alexandria Fishing Report.

The fishing the past couple weeks has been decent. Not great but still plenty of fish.  Currently the water temp is in the mid to low 70’s.  Walleye, crappie and smallmouth are all biting, but as the water temps drop the bite will just get better.

Once the water cools into the 60’s the fall patterns will begin and all species of fish will start to eat more. In the short term this current cold snap may hurt the fishing, but so does any major change in the weather.  Of course the long term effects will only drive down the water temps and improve the fishing.

Almost all species will start to prefer large minnows or minnow style baits. Especially smallmouth, they will be a main focus for me over the next month.  These fish are some of the hardest fighting and most aggressive fish you can find.  By the end of the month most small mouth will have added a considerable amount weight from eating nearly nonstop.

In mid to late October walleye will start to hit their peak bite window where they become extremely aggressive as well, so don’t miss out on what should some of the best fishing of the year. If you have any questions let me know.  Otherwise get up here to the Alexandria area over the next couple months to enjoy some incredible fall colors and tremendous fishing.  Have a great fish filled fall!
